Everyone likes different things. Usually you can just ask someone what they like, but many people with developmental disabilities don’t have the language abilities to tell you what they like. Without the ability to ask a person about his preferences, it can be difficult to identify what his individual preferences are, what he will find enjoyable to do in his free time, or what he will find motivating as a reinforcer when he is learning new skills.
Preference assessments are a great tool to help you determine what each individual may like and what you can use to reinforce new behaviors and skills.
This workshop will help you to understand how and when to use preference assessments to identify potential reinforcers.
