Treatment of Problem Behavior Maintained by Automatic Reinforcement

CREDIT: 1.5 BACB Type II CEUs

Automatically maintained problem behavior presents unique clinical challenges. This training reviews existing literature on the treatment of automatically maintained problem behavior and the effectiveness of each. In this training you will learn how to modify standard Functional Analyses to determine an automatic function, learn how to conduct additional hypothesis and non-hypothesis based assessments, and learn which function-based treatments to implement based on the results of all assessments. A more in-depth look at the treatment of severe self-injurious behavior (SIB) that is maintained by automatic reinforcers is provided. Specifically, an article review of different classifications of SIB is provided that help inform the selection of effective function-based treatment.

Objectives

  • Define automatically maintained problem behavior and provide examples of topographies
  • Describe assessment strategies beyond a standard functional analysis to identify the specific function of the automatically maintained problem behavior
  • Select intervention strategies for automatically maintained problem behavior
  • Identify self-injurious behavior and the benefits and risks of different treatments and restraints
